“We The People”

“We the People”, the opening words of the United States Constitution, is a living principle that defines the power and responsibility of citizens in a democracy.

Ben Franklin at the end of the Constitutional Convention was asked what kind of government had been created. He replied: “A republic, if you can keep it.”

History has shown, that to “keep it” means living three principles:

·       Understanding that power comes from ordinary citizens, not a king or ruling elite.

·       Believing that the success of government depends on the people’s responsibility, virtue, and participation.

·       Actively working as a citizen to protect and uphold the Constitution.

Without informed active participation, democracy weakens. Low voter turnout, political apathy and disengagement can lead to unrepresentative leadership and policies that serve only a narrow segment of society. In contrast, when we take ownership of our role, we help ensure fairness, transparency, and responsiveness in government.

Here are five practical ways to stay informed:

1.      Follow reliable news sources. Regularly read, watch or listen to reputable news outlets. Aim for a mix of perspectives to avoid algorithm reinforced bias.

2.      Engage with local news and community updates.

3.      Verify information before sharing. Take a moment and check the facts outside of platforms like X or Facebook or TikTok.

4.      Attend and participate in public meetings and forums. Town Halls and committee hearings provide direct insight into how decisions are made. They also give an opportunity for your voice to be heard.

5.      Follow civic and government organizations. Nonpartisan civic groups are an excellent source of accurate updates and policy implications.

If as an informed citizen, you believe the constitution is the bedrock of our society, I urge you to “show up” and protect the foundation of our democracy which starts with screaming that power comes from the people, not the rich, not the techbros, nor the people with oversize influence.

“We the People” reject kings, reject algorithm based brain washing and reject being subjugated by those who wish power over us.  

Show up! Stand up! Be heard!
